Who are you and what is your role within the store?
My name is Kay Knipschild and I´m the owner of the shop Burg & Schild in Berlin.
Together with my Team (David, Ruben, Ela and Vanessa) we run the shop and the online business.
Can you describe what kind of store you have, or working in?
We sell quality men’s clothing with the main focus on Japanese denim, horsehide leather jackets and all aspects of classic menswear.
Which brands are the core of the store collection?
The Real McCoy´s, Iron Heart, Buzz Rickson´s, Indigofera, Sugar Cane and Warehouse & Co.
Is there one brand in particular that is selling the best at the moment, which one is it, and why do you think it’s so successful?
Iron Heart is still our best selling brand for many years, the mix of quality , fitting and great fabrics are hard to beat. But also the great service of Iron Heart UK is a key to our success with the brand. But, brands like Porter, Sugar Cane and The Real McCoy´s are growing enormously at our shop.
How do you select/spot new brands to add to the store?
During the last 18 months my search for inspiration and new brands was made through internet. But usually, I prefer to talk to other retailers or to keep my eyes and ears open on my trips through Europe, Japan and the US.
What is your favorite pair of jeans?
Right now I love to wear my Duck Digger 1001XX 1947 from Warehouse & Co. The denim is not so super heavy (13,5oz), but if you had the chance to hold an original worn in 1940´s Levi’s in your hand, that’s very close!

How important are social channels to the store these days?
I would love to say it’s not important, but of course the impact on the shop and on the online store is very big. A lot of customers use these channels to get info about new products. And, if you use these platforms in a good and professional way, you can also gain new customers.
What kind of music are you playing mostly in the store?
We play any kind of Rock music in our shop. But I also like to hear some good old Jazz. We don’t have a concept playlist which we use. I´m thinking about to install again a turntable in the shop.
Are selling other goods as well next to clothing, if so, what kind of products?
Beause we offer so many accessories at Burg & Schild, like belts, hats, caps, bags, etc., there is not so much space left for other stuff.
We sell the newest mags from Clutch/Men´s file and Avant. And we offer also the natural perfumes and body wash from Juniper ridge.
What can we expect in the future of the store?
Because, I´m a curious person, we will present some new brands for 2022 and it’s time to set up a new online store!
